The Hospira, Inc. is a US-based company with headquarters in Lake Forest , Illinois . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index. Hospira was formed in 2004 when it was separated from the US company Abbott Laboratories . The company manufactures and sells pharmaceutical products. As the only manufacturer in the USA, Hospira produced the anesthetic sodium thiopental and sold it under the trade name Pentothal. Sodium thiopental is used in the USA for executions with lethal injection - usually in a poisonous cocktail consisting of three active substances . In some states, such as Ohio, it is the only component in lethal injection executions. The production and distribution of Pentothal ceased in January 2011.

On February 5, 2015, the company announced that Pfizer would acquire the company for approximately $ 17 billion. The complete takeover was completed on September 3, 2015.
