Hotel is a 1965 novel by Arthur Hailey . The novel is about an independent hotel in New Orleans , the St. Gregory, and the efforts of the management to make it profitable again after a period of mismanagement while avoiding the hostile takeover by the O'Keefe hotel chain.

The novel was made into a feature film in 1967 and a television series from 1983 to 1988 .

action

The central character of the plot is Peter McDermott, the deputy manager, who is still young but still has a disreputable past and is now trying to regain a foothold. He tries to solve numerous problems in the hotel, which is not made easy for him, especially by the hotel owner, who adheres to racial segregation . Various hotel employees are corrupt , but the owner does not want to fire them because they have been working there for a long time and he falsely trusts them. The hotel is financially burdened, a high payment is due, which the owner cannot afford, so that he would actually have to sell the hotel. The owner of the O'Keefe hotel chain would like to incorporate the hotel into his group. The Duke and Duchess of Croydon are staying in the presidential suite , the Duke is responsible for a fatal traffic accident with a hit and run. There is a hotel thief in the hotel, sons of respected citizens throw a wild party at which there is an attempted rape. The novel plot spans Monday through Friday for five days and comprises several storylines that run through the novel. At the climax of the plot, an elevator also crashes, killing and injuring people.
