Hotel Alte Herberge Weiss Kreuz
The Hotel Alte Herberge Weiss Kreuz is located in Splügen in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It stands in the upper part of the village in the old village center and belongs to the Swiss Historic Hotels .
history
The oldest parts of the former mule inn date from 1375; In its current form, the house was built during the reconstruction after the village fire of 1716. At that time it was rebuilt using older components. In the last decades of the 20th century, the building was no longer maintained and had become uninhabitable.
From 1998 to 2001 the house was restored and converted into a hotel. The structure of the 16 rooms was largely preserved, supplemented with modern architecture and individually designed. Numerous doors, windows and panels from the early 18th century have been preserved. The former open driveway for the pack animals now serves as the entrance area, the restaurant is housed in the former hay barn. In 2002, the “Weiss Kreuz” was awarded the “Historic Hotel of the Year 2002” award for its gentle, monumental renovation.
Building history
In an architectural historical study carried out by Augustin Carigiet from the Graubünden Monument Preservation, four construction phases were identified:
- The oldest parts of the building are the two underground cellars and the parts of the building above in the east of the complex. The eastern part of this building was outside the current building.
- A free-standing stable was built to the southwest. It was destroyed in the village fire in 1716 and rebuilt on the same foundation walls.
- The previous building, today's main part of the house, was connected to the stable by a large vaulted room.
- After the village fire, the complex was given its current form. In the east of the vaulted room a storage room was added between the stable and the main building, in the north a spacious entrance hall was created with a side entrance for the carriage of the haulers.
