The Hotel Arminius in the Ritterstraße in Bad Salzuflen is a traditional hotel in an old half-timbered house that dates back to the 16th century.

history

The building complex dates from the second half of the 16th century. It was built by Nickell Wulfert. The building consists of a front building and a somewhat smaller rear building that was built at the same time. Both structures have stone substructures and superimposed and completely separate half-timbered storage floors.

During a renovation around 1600, a two-story board installation was added to the side of the gate entrance in the front building. The coats of arms of Lippe and Salzuflen were added together with a family coat of arms around 1700. Another renovation around 1800 changed the former hall house into a multi-storey residential building, the rooms of which were accessible from a central longitudinal corridor. The gable triangle was provided with a cripple hip. Around 1900 the building was rebuilt to accommodate a restaurant. The building has always been a house for high demands. Mayor Johann zu Volckhausen lived here between 1595 and 1610, and later the rich Vineator family. The Amsterdam merchant Schröder bought the house in 1736, and his son Cornelius opened an inn with an adjoining dance hall for the first time in 1787.

The name "Arminius Hotel" first appeared in 1891 and goes back to the tenant at the time, the Detmold beer publisher Wilhelm Schäfer. The name Arminius is reminiscent of the Cheruscan prince Arminius , who inflicted one of their most devastating defeats on the Romans in the Varus Battle of the year 9 with the annihilation of three legions .
