The hotel was opened in 1856 under the management of Hottinger and changed hands many times in the years that followed. In 1896 the hotel, managed by Adolf Schüler, was called “Baierischer Hof” and in 1931 it was renamed “Bayerischer Hof”. Around 1945 the German Wehrmacht occupied the Bayrischer Hof as a base, as American troops were about to set up their headquarters in the vicinity of Heidelberg. Most of these still exist today.

After the hotel had been closed for eleven years, it was reopened in June 1956 with 90 beds and was one of the leading hotels in Heidelberg at the time. The installation of a lift, private bathrooms and room telephones gave it the usual comfort. In 1982 the hotel got into an economic crisis due to poor competitiveness. Over the years, the hotel had developed back to 46 rooms with 70 beds, only six of them with bath and toilet. Bayrischer Hof Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, today Academy Group Hotels and Restaurants GmbH, leased the listed building and renovated it within three years. The reopening of the 3-star superior hotel took place in October 2008. Today the hotel has 56 rooms, a breakfast room and nine apartments in a dependence at Fahrtgasse 17/1.
