The Hotel d'Angleterre or just d'Angleterre is a luxury hotel on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen , the capital of Denmark .

history

The origins of the hotel can be found in an excursion site founded on May 5th, 1755 on the corner of Laxegade and Vingårdstræde. Jean Maréchal (1732–1776) from Lorraine was given the royal privilege of "hosters" five years later. After his death, his widow Anna Marghrete ran the business for eleven years before it was taken over by Gottfried Raue (1748–1810) in 1787. He expanded the accommodation and named it "Hotel d'Angleterre".

In a major fire in Copenhagen in June 1795, the hotel burned down completely, whereupon Raue bought the "Gramske Gård" originally built by Storkansler Friedrich von Ahlefeldt on the corner of Kongens Nytorv and Østergade and converted it into a hotel. After Raue's death, his long-time partner and son-in-law took over the management of the hotel. However, he went bankrupt after the national bankruptcy in 1813 .

After a forced auction in 1817, the hotel changed hands several times until it was bought by "Det Kjøbenhavnske Bygge-Selskab" on December 23, 1872. The hotel was then rebuilt and reopened on April 29, 1875. Since then further sales have taken place; Carl Jacobsen was its owner at times.

In 1965 the hotel was used as a location for the film The Torn Curtain .

From 2011 to 2013 the hotel was renovated.

The hotel belongs to the hotel marketing association The Leading Hotels of the World Ltd.
