The Hotel Palace was built in Zakopane in 1930 . After the invasion of Poland , the hotel was taken over by the occupying forces. It served as the headquarters of the Gestapo from October 1939 to January 1945 and gained notoriety as the “torture cellar of Podhale ”. Wincenty Galica , Bronisław Czech , Piotr Dańkowski , Ernest Durkalec , Franciszek Gajowniczek , Izydor Gąsienica-Łuszczek , Stanisław Marusarz and Helena Marusarzówna , among others , were tortured in the hotel . In total, about two thousand people were held captive in the building, of whom about four hundred were murdered there. In 1994 Wincenty Galica initiated the establishment of the Museum of Resistance in the hotel. The prisoners' drawings can still be seen on the cellar walls of the hotel.
32 Gestapo employees were stationed in the Hotel Palace, the number of which was later increased to 80.
