Thomas Schmitt (geographer)

Thomas M. Schmitt (* 1968 ) is a German geographer and author. He is a private lecturer and academic advisor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Life

Schmitt studied geography and also physics, economics, philosophy and religious studies in Saarbrücken and Munich. He did his doctorate in 2002 at the Technical University of Munich on the subject of “Mosques in Germany. Conflicts about their construction and use ”. After working for the Zukunftswerkstatt Saar eV , an association with a focus on sustainability, the promotion of the Local Agenda 21 , sustainable energy supply and socioculture and in the special research area “Local Action in Africa in the Context of Global Influences” at the University of Bayreuth , Schmitt completed his habilitation in 2009/2010 Geographical Institute of the University of Bonn with the topic “Cultural Governance. On the cultural geography of the UNESCO World Heritage regime ”. Then Schmitt worked at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Multi-Religious and Multi-Ethnic Societies in Göttingen. Since 2012 he has been employed at the Institute for Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 2014/15 he represented the chair for human geography at the University of Augsburg.
