The Hovenring is a circular bridge suspended from a pylon with guy ropes for bicycle traffic over a connecting road between the Dutch towns of Eindhoven and Veldhoven .

history

For several years there was a large roundabout on the northern access road from Eindhoven to Veldhoven, the lane of which was three lanes wide , but which were deliberately not provided with longitudinal markings . The intention was to encourage drivers to drive more quietly. However, many drivers found this construction uncomfortable.

Also because of the development of the new Eindhoven district of Meerhoven and the planned relocation of the nearby exit 31 of the A2 motorway by a few hundred meters to the south, an increase in capacity at this intersection was necessary. For this purpose, a futuristic-looking concept was designed in which a normal intersection with traffic lights was provided for car traffic and a floating roundabout for cyclists. This elevated roundabout was suspended from a 70 m high pylon like a suspension bridge with guy ropes. The approach ramps for cyclists are relatively long in order to keep the gradient low.

Construction began in mid-May 2011. The intersection was officially opened on December 30, 2011. Less than a week later, the intersection was closed to traffic again because vibrations occurred in the tensioning cables that could lead to dangerous situations. The repair was delayed longer due to the adverse weather conditions. The intersection was only opened to car traffic on June 9, 2012 and the Hovenring was officially opened on June 29. Before that, the intersection was briefly closed again on the night of June 26th to 27th because the vibration dampers were not installed correctly.

The cost of the project was eleven million euros. 40% of this was borne by the city of Eindhoven, 60% financed by the European Union. Around 4,000 to 5,000 cyclists use the structure every day.

The name Hovenring

In a kind of competition, the population was asked to suggest names for the construction. Around 200 residents suggested around 330 names. At an information meeting on March 22, 2010, visitors were able to vote for a name. A large majority chose the name Hovenring .

The word part Hoven- is taken from the common part of the place names Eindhoven and Veldhoven . As -hoven it occurs more often in Dutch and Flemish place names, especially in the Eindhoven region.
