Hoxeler Viaduct

The Hoxeler Viaduct is a railway bridge on the Hunsrückquerbahn . Despite the name, the viaduct does not stand on Hoxeler Boden, but in the area of the Morbach district of Morscheid-Riedenburg and is popularly called Ennisch-Breck . However, this name is not clear. Furthermore, the name "Hunsrück Railway Viaduct" is used in some sources.

The bridge is approx. 160 m long and 42 m high. It has a total of 8 arched openings, each 16 m wide. The construction period lasted from 1900 to 1903. Workers from Italy, Poland and Austria were involved in the construction of the bridge. In the course of the bridge there is a left turn exactly at km 87. The bridge is considered one of the most beautiful railway structures in the Hunsrück.

Shortly before the tunnel at the western end of the viaduct there was a tunnel watch.

During the Second World War, the bridge was the target of numerous air raids several times. In 1944 it was so badly damaged that it was partly impassable. Several bomb craters, which have become biotopes today, bear witness to this. After the reconstruction of the destroyed viaduct, it could be handed over to railway operations on August 3, 1950.

The last passenger train crossed the bridge on May 29, 1976. After that, only freight trains and special trips took place. There have been no trains running over the bridge since the 1990s. Since the closure of this section of the Hunsrückquerbahn between Hermeskeil and Morbach, the viaduct has received little attention. In the future, the bridge is to be used better for tourism, but there is no funding for recommissioning and advertising. At least the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig leads past the Hoxeler Viaduct on the Börfink-Morbach stage.
