Hreppur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A hreppur is the name of a rural community in Iceland . There are no towns in these administrative units and at most small settlements. At its top is the "Hreppstjóri".

It is one of the oldest administrative units in Iceland and can be traced back to the time of Christianization in the years after 1000. During the Free State, it was a form of self-organization. An Hrepp had to have at least 20 passed pawns (thing farmers who were obliged to drive a thing). The Hreppar are already mentioned in the Grágás and Jónsbók .

During the Free State and also during the annexation to Denmark after the Reformation , the farmers of Hreppur had the duty to care for the poor in their area.
