Hrvatske autoceste doo (HAC) (German approximately Croatian Highways GmbH ) is the largest Croatian motorway operating company. It was founded in 1991 and is 100% owned by the Croatian Ministry of Transport under the current Minister Božidar Kalmeta . The current CEO of HAC is Stjepko Boban .

The national operating company HAC is responsible for the management of investments in the Croatian motorway infrastructure and its subsequent use. In addition to HAC, there is the state operating company Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb (ARZ), as well as two private companies: Autocesta Zagreb-Macelj (AZM) and Bina Istra.

Fraud scandal

At the end of 2009, numerous corruption scandals were noticed in the management of the HAC. In the " Operation Nesklad " (German: Operation inconsistency ) carried out by the Croatian anti-fraud authority USKOK at the end of November 2009, five board members, including the former chairman Jurica Prskalo , were arrested. The charges include the allegation of embezzlement of significant sums in the maintenance of various tunnels. Those responsible are accused of having estimated excessive amounts in the balance sheets for the dyeing of the Mala Kapela and Sveti Rok tunnels and of having made agreements with various private companies. As a result of the scandal, public calls for the resignation of Transport Minister Božidar Kalmeta increased .

privatization

At the end of 2012, the Croatian government announced that it wanted to privatize HAC and its sister company ARZ.
