Hugh Dykes, Baron Dykes
Hugh John Maxwell Dykes, Baron Dykes (born May 17, 1939 ) is a British politician. He is the foreign policy spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords .
Life
Dykes studied at Pembroke College (Cambridge) . In 1966 he married Susan Margaret Smith , with whom he has three sons. The marriage ended in divorce in 2000.
Dykes moved in 1970 as a Conservative Party MP in the Harrow East constituency in the House of Commons and was in Parliament until 1997. From 1974 to 1977 he was also in the European Parliament . He was Secretary of Defense under Edward Heath during his time in Parliament and was a member of the Cabinet Office .
After his internal party defeat by Kenneth Clarke in 1997, Dyke joined the Liberal Democrats. Just a year after joining the party, he became an advisor to Paddy Ashdown on European affairs.
In 2004 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Dykes , of Harrow Weald in the London Borough of Harrow, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since.
In addition to his work as a spokesman for foreign policy, he was Vice President of the German-British Society .
