Hugh Hartwell

Hugh Kenneth Hartwell (born January 18, 1945 in Hamilton / Ontario ) is a Canadian composer and music teacher.

Hartwell studied at McGill University with István Anhalt and at the University of Pennsylvania with George Rochberg and George Crumb . From 1971 to 1976 he taught at Kirkland College in Clinton, New York, and has since been Professor of Music Theory, Composition and Jazz at McMaster University . From 1986 to 1989 he was head of the music faculty here.

In 1986 his Waltz Inventions were listed as one of six representative works during the International Year of Canadian Music at the John F. Kennedy Center . Since 1989 he has been an editor of the Canadian University Music Review , the magazine of the Canadian University Music Society .
