Hugo Bachmann (born September 27, 1935 ) is a Swiss civil engineer.

biography

Hugo Bachmann studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich and obtained his diploma in 1959. Until 1963 he worked in an engineering office and in the development department of the prestressed concrete company Stahlton AG / BBRV in Zurich. Then he worked again at the ETH, where he was assistant to Bruno Thürlimann and received his doctorate in 1967 (for the plasticity-theoretical calculation of statically indeterminate reinforced concrete beams ). Part-time he managed a medium-sized construction and general contractor in the St.Gallen Rhine Valley. Since 1969 he has been an assistant professor and since 1977 a full professor at the Institute for Structural Analysis and Design (IBK) at ETH Zurich. In 2000 he retired (farewell lecture: Reinforced concrete, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering - a few contradictions ).

He was an advisory expert on numerous construction projects such as bridges and high-rise structures for questions relating to reinforced and prestressed concrete, earthquake-proof construction and vibration problems in structures. Before he dealt primarily with the structural dynamics and earthquake protection of buildings, he researched the plasticity of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures, lightweight concrete, crack formation, shear design, prestressing, etc. a.

Bachmann was also repeatedly committed to community issues. He was the main initiator and president of the Federal People's Initiative for footpaths and hiking trails, which in 1979 brought about the corresponding article in the federal constitution. In 2004 he founded the Foundation for Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering to promote the skills of engineers in practice.

Hugo Bachmann built up the field of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering at the ETH. Among other things, an earthquake simulator in the form of a vibrating table was developed and put into operation in 1995. He was involved in the elaboration of the earthquake standards in Switzerland and in Eurocode 8 and wrote a standard work with Thomas Paulay (University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand) on earthquake design of reinforced concrete buildings, both of which developed the principle of capacity design. Bachmann also examined dynamic loads caused by people in buildings (e.g. gymnasiums and sports halls, pedestrian bridges) and damping effects in reinforced concrete. A monograph by him on vibration problems in buildings has also been translated into English. The monograph on seismic conceptual design of buildings, which has been translated into numerous languages, including Turkish, Arabic and Chinese, also had a worldwide broadcast.

He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Kassel and an honorary member of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE), in which he was representative for Europe, and of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE).
