Hugo Edward ( April 23, 1845 in Berlin - 1914 ) was a German theater actor .

Life

Edward, the son of a respected businessman, wanted to play theater rather than study from an early age. He arranged theater performances with classmates, in which he always had the big say. He was therefore happy to be able to work as an extra at the Berlin royal opera house in the costume of a knight, citizen or compatriot.

Despite his father's attempts to keep him away from a stage career, Edwards continued to take part in amateur performances such as Die Räuber von Maria Kulm , Schloss Greifenstein , The Tournament in Kronstein, etc.

After the death of his father, after passing the declamation test with chief director Schütz, he was accepted into the ensemble of the suburban theater. After he had also received dramatic lessons from Adele Peroni-Glasbrenner , he tried his hand at successfully playing "Mortimer", "Romeo", "Carlos", "Ferdinand" etc. There followed a few stops in the provinces, more likely he went to the Wallnertheater and in 1865 Hoftheater Stuttgart changed. There he played mainly ardent lovers. In 1869 he went to Theodor Lobe at the City Theater in Breslau . A year later, he and Marie Seebach were engaged to tour the USA. This trip was prevented by the outbreak of the Franco-German War in 1870/71, and since all theater operations were suspended during the war, he took lessons as a paramedic in Stuttgart and volunteered as such.

After the end of the campaign, he received an application for a guest performance from the Darmstadt court theater. There he made his debut on April 14, 1871 as "Friedrich Schiller" in Die Karlschüler and was then engaged. He stayed there until 1896. After that he worked until at least 1902 as artistic director of the Otto Devrient Folk Festival Luther and Gustav Adolf , where he also played the two title roles at the same time.

He was very popular with theater audiences both in Darmstadt and on his numerous guest tours, and Kaiser Wilhelm also appreciated the actor so much that he often had to appear on his orders as "ensign" in the Swiss comedy Epidemic , a role that most people have other theaters was a trouser role . In addition, it was versatile, be it in tragedy, in drama and comedy, Schwank and also in the farce.

In recognition of his acting achievements, he was made an honorary member of the court theaters in Coburg and Gotha and in 1898 was awarded the title of a Saxon-Weimar court councilor.
