The Humanist Primary School in Fürth is a free private school of the Humanist Association . It was opened in 2008 and is the first and so far only secular-humanistic primary school in Germany. It is headed by Ulrike von Chossy.

history

In 2004 the Humanist Association, at that time still called HVD Nürnberg, applied for the approval of a reform pedagogical elementary school in Fürth's Waldstrasse. This application was initially rejected by the responsible government of the Central Franconia district on the grounds that there was no particular educational interest in such a school. A lawsuit against the rejection was dismissed by the Ansbach Administrative Court.

On April 1, 2008, the appeal hearing took place before the Bavarian Administrative Court (VGH) in Munich - with the result that the VGH overturned the Ansbach judgment and the rejection notice of the Middle Franconia government. The VGH demanded a new decision from the government, which recognized the special educational interest of the submitted concept. Revision was not allowed.

On September 17, 2008, the Humanist Elementary School started teaching with 36 students. The lessons took place provisionally in a two-story building that today houses the Humanist Kindergarten in Fürth-Waldstrasse. In autumn 2012, construction began on the new school building, which opened in July 2014 after almost two years of construction. Together with the attached after-school care center, the neighboring kindergarten and the humanistic day care center in Fürth-Am Marsweg, the school forms the humanistic education campus in Fürth.

In the 2015/16 school year, 100 students attended the humanistic elementary school. They are divided into four mixed-year groups, each supported by a teacher and a social worker. Each group has two rooms arranged according to didactic aspects, in which individual work, partner work, group discussions and research-based learning are possible in parallel.

Pedagogy and goals

The Humanist Primary School Fürth is a reform pedagogical school, its concept is based, among other things, on the work and knowledge of John Dewey , Peter Petersen , Maria Montessori and the radical librarian teacher Alexander Sutherland Neill . In the "Free Schools" movement influenced by Neill, modern humanistic pedagogy developed a practicable system of holistic learning methods for the various school levels.

The following goals were formulated in the concept for the humanistic elementary school:

humanism

When it comes to questions of life, attention should be paid to experience, reason and enlightenment, as well as to the freedom of belief and conscience of all people.

Human rights

Getting to know human rights should be the transfer of knowledge and values at the same time. Rights should be experienced as valid for oneself and others alike, and that rights stand for values such as tolerance, freedom, equality and solidarity.

Self-determination and responsibility

The children should be encouraged to act independently in order to take responsibility for themselves, their actions towards their fellow human beings, as well as for the preservation of our natural basis of life.

tolerance

The aim is an atmosphere of diversity and openness in which the diversity of people, their living environments and goals in life are recognized and respected.

democracy

Democratic decision-making processes are included in the school. This teaches the possibilities and limits of one's own effectiveness and the learning of strategies for finding compromises.

Relationships

According to their childhood, children are viewed as equal people in order to create reliable relationships that are characterized by empathy, appreciation and authenticity.

Meaning of life

Everyone has the right to shape their life independently and to give it meaning. The school supports the search for meaning and orientation in life on the basis of a humanistic worldview. The school offers the opportunity to deal with questions and answers from philosophy and religions.

Think and act

It is a concern of the school to promote philosophy as a cultural technique for shaping human life and critical and systematic thinking as a prerequisite for moral action and personal meaning, as well as the development of an understanding of the world.

Knowledge and understanding

Not only the acquisition, but also the handling of knowledge is important. It is important to reflect ethically on the application of scientific knowledge. The focus is on the importance of what has been learned for one's own life and for the development of global responsibility.

Environmental awareness

In the school, sensitivity for ecological questions should be created and a responsible attitude towards the natural environment should be demonstrated.
