action

It has been a long time since Louis, now 34 years old, left his family without saying goodbye. From then on Louis had traveled the world and made a career as a writer far from the rural idyll. After the family had not heard from him for years, he announced his visit after twelve years, and his surprise arrival caused great excitement for the family, especially his mother Martine.

Once at his parents' house, the anticipation of his relatives fades, and soon you stop talking about trivialities, and Louis is confronted with allegations that he still knows from before. His sister Suzanne tells him that she only lives at home because he left the family at the time and she never had the heart to do something like that. His brother Antoine, who is ten years older than him, tells him that his long absence has given him his status as mum's darling and only wants to pretend to be the prodigal son who has returned home. When they meet again, Louis sees Catherine, Antoine's wife, for the first time.

Actually, Louis had come back to say goodbye to his family, because he suffers from a terminal illness and knows that he will soon die. However, since his family is far too busy reproaching him and arguing among themselves, he does not get around to delivering this news to them personally and almost does not want to tell them anymore. Louis also notices that he has distanced himself emotionally from his family because of his long absence, and that his relatives are also unable to show real feelings.

Literary template

The film is based on the play Simply the End of the World (original title Juste la fin du monde ) by Jean-Luc Lagarce , published in 1990, which premiered in October 1999 at the Théâtre National de la Colline in Paris and on November 8, 2001 at the Theater Bremen celebrated its German premiere. The drama is published in a German translation by the theater publisher Felix Bloch Erben .

Lagarce, who was born in the Haute-Saône department in France in 1957 , was HIV- positive himself and died on September 30, 1995, two weeks after the completion of his last text Das ferne Land (original title Le pays lointain ) at the age of 38 in Paris of AIDS. Lagarce wrote the drama during a work stay in Berlin and never saw it when it was first staged in 1999. Lagarce is one of the most played authors in France, and Juste la fin du monde was a school reading for many years after Lagarce's death .

production

Staff and cast

The actors at the premiere in Cannes : Gaspard Ulliel , Léa Seydoux , Marion Cotillard , director Xavier Dolan, Vincent Cassel and Nathalie Baye (from left to right)

Xavier Dolan developed the script based on the play and also acted as director and producer of the film. In his cinematic adaptation of Lagarce's piece, the enfant terrible of the family film after I Killed My Mother and Mommy is once again concerned with his favorite subject. It is - after Do not say who you are! (Original title Tom à la ferme ) from 2013, which is based on the play of the same name by Michel Marc Bouchard - about Dolan's second adaptation of a play.

Dolan starred in Louis with the actor Gaspard Ulliel . Louis' mother Martine played Nathalie Baye , his sister Suzanne Léa Seydoux , the role of his brother Antoine Vincent Cassel and that of his wife Catherine Marion Cotillard .

Filming

As a cameraman Dolan was able to engage the two-time Genie Award winner André Turpin , with whom the director last worked on the films Don't Say Who You Are! and Mommy had worked together.

Turpin begins the film with a montage sequence in which Louis' taxi ride and the mania for preparation at home are cut in parallel, thus introducing them to the family. As the film progresses, the camera rarely takes a distance from the characters' faces. The resulting oppressive closeness, according to Tim Caspar Boehme from taz , expresses the failure of communication in the family and shows how much the individuals have diverged from one another. Saturated colors in the film underline the claustrophobia and depression that Dolan wanted to express at this reunion. The criticism here was that Dolan and Turpin were unable to create understandably coherent scenes due to the almost exclusively close-up shots and the mise en scène they created. In addition, the characters' sentences that they began in medias res are often not completed, and this meant that thoughts could not be thought through to the end.

publication

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film has a consistently oppressive atmosphere , characterized by family conflicts and the theme of dying . Due to their psychosocial level of development, children from the age of 12 are able to understand and deal with these issues and conflicts. At the same time, the story hardly offers any starting point for children aged 12 and over, which leads to an emotional distance from the events. "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 45 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (of 38 critics in total, as of January 2, 2017).

Xavier Dolan , here at the premiere in Cannes , directed and developed the script for the film

Frédéric Jaeger from critic.de compares Dolan's adaptation of a play with a chamber play in which suspense is the focus of the unsaid, the unknown, the past and the upcoming . However, this is not embedded in a thriller plot, which means that only the excessively increased emotional anticipation in the tense faces remains as a projection surface.

Peter Debruge from Variety also discovers little excitement and says that Dolan only found a way with the film to anger and exhaust the audience, and after an agonizing hour and a half at the end, it achieved a completely unexpected catharsis.

Hannah Pilarczyk from Spiegel Online does not understand in her criticism why the film outraged the critics after its premiere in Cannes. Pilarczyk describes the film as simply great and sums it up: "Even if the subject of the dysfunctional family is nothing new: the way Dolan demonstrates the impossibility of a family feels completely new."

Christiane Peitz from Tagesspiegel speaks of a psychological thriller about the limits of communication and compares Louis' family to a theater of war, but remarks in comparison to Dolan's previous films: “So far, Dolan had built surprises into his anarchically bitter stories, small fantastic escapades. This time there is only a simple, wordless gesture of understanding between Catherine and Louis, clearly staged. "

By Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter was simply the end of the world early on as a possible candidate in the category Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2017 brought into the conversation and the film was later officially filed as a Canadian contribution. In December 2016, the film was put on the shortlist for foreign language films, from which the official nominations for the Academy Awards are made.

Dolan was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his work on the film . It was the second time that he was recognized by the jury. Dolan received the Art Cinema Award at the Hamburg Film Festival 2016.
