C. & F. Schnabel
The C. & F. Schnabel cloth factory was one of the large cloth factories in Hückeswagen . It was located on the Wupper near the village of Hummeltenberg and arose from the Hummeltenberg mill. The company was founded by Franz Schnabel, among others, after whom a street in Hückeswagen was named. One of the innovations was the lighting of the factory, which was ensured by producing its own gas.
history
The cloth factory was founded in 1856. At that time, Cornelius and Franz Schnabel - the company name results from the two first names - acquired a property with nine parcels and a building for 4,900 Reichstaler . The building was the Hummeltenberger Mühle built in 1838 by Carl Wilhelm Schingen in the so-called Kretzerloch near the village of Hummeltenberg. In the same year, the two applied for a license for a cloth factory that was already operated by its previous owner Carl Wilhelm Schingen. Parts of the system were also a turbine and an upper and lower trench to the river Wupper. In 1857 a "gas preparation plant" was added. The factory was illuminated with its own production of oil and coal gas. In the following years the company continued to expand. In 1859 two steam boilers were added, manufactured by the Van der Zypen & Charlier company from Cologne-Deutz.
In 1907 the cloth manufacturing was outsourced to the Schnabelsmühle . The son Max Schnabel (1856–1952) installed a cotton wool factory there instead. The cotton wool factory burned down completely in 1929, but was rebuilt during the economic crisis in the early 1930s. Numerous renovations were carried out in 1932. In 1965 the end of the factory location was near; there was a fire in the cotton wool factory, which repeated itself three years later. Around 1971/72 the building was finally demolished to make way for the Wuppertalsperre , which was meanwhile under construction. The wadding production was relocated to the Corneliusweg (Hückeswagen).
The founder
Franz Schnabel was born on January 1st, 1823 in Hückeswagen and died on February 17th, 1896, also in Hückeswagen. He was a co-founder and partner in the C. & F. Schnabel company. After 1860 he built the Villa Schnabel on Rader Straße (now: Bachstraße) , one of the outstanding building monuments in the city of Hückeswagen. The street named after Franz Schnabel was initially known under the term “Five Houses”. These were workers' apartments that were built by the company. In the year the company was founded, on September 23, 1856, he married Bertha Löbbecke, who also came from a family of drapers.
