Living under the rain tower

The Hundertwasserhaus Plochingen "Living under the Regenturm" is a building in the Baden-Württemberg city of Plochingen that was designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000) . It was built from November 1991 to August 1994.

Prehistory, planning, construction

In the 1980s, the center of Plochingen was redesigned in terms of town planning. A historical core was created on the market square. Marktstrasse became a pedestrian zone . However, there was a lack of parking spaces, apartments and space for trade and commerce. The Neckarstrasse and Schorndorferstrasse area was still fallow. By the early 1990s, the concept of a closed area with an inner courtyard was developed for this area; the courtyard should be public.

With the help of contacts through the Austrian twin town Zwettl , Friedensreich Hundertwasser could be won over to design the inner courtyard. He also designed the rain tower with the four golden balls. The "rain tower" is 33 meters high. The balls at the four upper corners are covered with 24 carat gold leaf and have a diameter of 1.60 m.

A residential and commercial building with 6,800 m² of living space, 5,500 m² of commercial space and a two-story underground car park was built under a private developer.
