Starvation attempt
The hunger test (also known as the 48- or 72-hour fasting test) is a procedure for repeated unexplained hypoglycemia in order to rule out or substantiate the suspicion of a specific tumor , the so-called insulinoma . Since the insulinoma goes hand in hand with increased production of insulin , it shows up in the hunger test through a lowered blood sugar level .
The test procedure consists in letting the person to be examined fast for 48–72 hours with plenty of fluids. The measurement of blood sugar , insulin and C-peptide is carried out every 4 hours, with blood sugar values below 60 mg / dl it is measured every hour. If the sugar value falls twice below 40 mg / dl, the experiment is terminated, as is the case with values below 50 mg / dl if the patient develops symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
