Hunky and Spunky is a 1938 American animated short film directed by Dave Fleischer .
action
Donkey mother Hunky and her donkey foal Spunky are out and about in the desert . Among other things, Hunky teaches Spunky to neigh properly and to get to the water of cacti . When Spunky introduces himself to a white bunny, Hunky lies down for a nap.
Spunky and the bunny are racing. A heavily laden man appears who lures Spunky with an apple, catches him and uses the little animal as a packhorse for his numerous goods. Spunky screams desperately for his mother. It only wakes up when Spunky has already been pulled up a mountain. She rushes to her child's aid, cuts the tether and first throws the villain into his house and then kicks it onto a distant rock. Both donkeys neigh happily and move on.
production
Hunky and Spunky was released on June 24, 1938 as part of the Fleischer cartoon series Color Classics . The cartoon was also the beginning of a separate hunky-and-spunky cartoon series within the Color Classics series. By 1941 six more cartoons were made around the donkey duo. All cartoons were shot in Technicolor .
Awards
Hunky and Spunky was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1939 , but could not prevail against Disney's Ferdinand the Bull .
