The Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP), ( German : Christian-Protestant Toba-Batakkirche ) is a Lutheran church .
In 1861 the Rhenish Mission Society began missionary work in the Batak Mountains on Sumatra , Indonesia . The missionary Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen worked in the area from 1864 to 1918 . He campaigned for the training of local pastors so that the church became independent as early as 1930.
The church currently has around 4.1 million members, making it the largest Protestant church in Indonesia. The communities are not only located in Sumatra, but throughout Indonesia, some also in neighboring countries. The HKBP maintains schools, hospitals and social stations, and since 1954 also a university named after Nommensen in Medan and Pematang Siantar in North Sumatra . Chief Bishop (Ephorus) has been Darwin Lumbantobing since 2016 .
The church is a member of the Lutheran World Federation , the Christian Conference of Asia and the World Council of Churches as well as the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) .
In January 2010, two HKBP churches in Sibuhuan were set on fire.
