Hurricane Electric is a global backbone - operators with special focus on IPv6 . Hurricane Electric became known, among other things, for its exhaustion counter , various apps and widgets that show how many IPv4 addresses are still available, as well as for its tunnel broker , which distributes IPv6 Internet access including larger IP networks free of charge.

Hurricane Electric was founded in 1994 by Mike Leber as a garage company and offers IP transit , i.e. the connection of other providers to his backbone for the purpose of paid data exchange, web hosting, hosting of dedicated servers and colocation .

IP backbone

Hurricane Electric is the operator of the world's largest IPv6 backbone, measured in terms of traffic and the number of connected autonomous systems . The backbone, which includes transatlantic and transpacific connections and is made up of OC48, OC192 and optical 10 Gbit Ethernet connections, is connected to over 50 of the largest Internet nodes and more than 2100 networks around the world and maintains more than 8000 BGP sessions. The backbone is also able to transport IPv4 traffic.

The number of the Autonomous System (AS) from Hurricane Electric is 6939. The peering policy is open , traffic from other providers with which the HE-AS peers (for example to Internet nodes) to customers and vice versa is received and passed on free of charge.

Tunnel broker

Hurricane Electric has been offering a free tunnel broker for a long time, which is aimed primarily at developers and administrators who are keen to experiment and who want to try out IPv6 before its broader introduction. To this end, Hurricane Electric operates tunnel broker servers in many American and some European cities. Customers can request a / 48 network in addition to the typical / 64 network. In addition, tunnels with BGP support are possible to publish your own network prefixes.

The Terms of Service do not exclude the commercial use of the tunnel.
