Cough suppressants are drugs that are intended for the symptomatic treatment of coughs . they seem

• Cough -relieving ( antitussives ) or
• expectorant ( expectorant ).

Simultaneous treatment with drugs from both groups must be avoided, as the drugs are counterproductive to one another. Cough suppressants of the antitussive genus are administered for a dry, “unproductive” cough, the so-called dry cough. Cough suppressants of the expectorant genus are used to liquefy viscous secretions in the lungs so that they can be coughed up more easily.
