Hutzwang

Hutzwang describes the compulsion not to herd cattle individually, but only to let them graze in the community herd.

Hutzwang is especially typical of the historic corridor shape of the Gewannflure , which was cultivated with the three-field economy . Livestock served primarily as a supplier of the important fertilizer and as draft animals . Meat production only played a very minor role. In the arable fields, which arose mainly on high-yield loess soils , pasture areas were rare because of the intensive arable farming . In a very complex system, fallow land , stubble fields and meadows were used to graze the cattle and at the same time ensure the fertility of the soil. Extensive forms of land use, on which cattle were grazed in other fields, were rare on these high-yielding soils.
