Hyalith glass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hyalith glass (also hyalite glass , lava glass ) is an opaque, red or black stone glass developed in South Bohemia in the early 19th century , which was modeled on the basalt ware from Wedgwood and was mostly decorated with gold painting (especially chinoiserie ).

The black hyalith glass was developed in the Buquoyschen glassworks in South Bohemia, Georgenthal or Silberberg and produced from 1817 . Sealing wax red hyalith ( Rotwelsches ) was already produced in the 17th century.

The hyalith glass was used as a decorative glass for the production of bottles in which light-sensitive substances (such as medicines) should be stored.

Manufacturing

In one variant, hyalith is made by fusing iron slag, basalt or lava with two percent coal powder and five to six percent bone ash or tin oxide. The other method is to color ordinary glass with a lot of cobalt, manganese, nickel and iron oxide.
