Pleural effusion of the left half of the thorax

A pleural effusion containing fibrin and protein , i.e. an accumulation of serous fluids in the pleural space , is called a serothorax . It occurs as a result of an inflammatory or tumorous disease of the pleura . If the pleural effusion is low in protein and cells, it is called hydrothorax (formerly also dropsy of the chest ). The hydrothorax usually occurs as a result of right or left ventricular heart failure , nephrotic syndrome, or (as hepatic hydrothorax) cirrhosis of the liver .

causes

The causes of serothorax in the literature are cardiovascular diseases , disorders of the blood protein balance such as dysproteinemia and hypoproteinemia , malignant pleurisy diseases, inflammations arising from intrathoracic diseases or abdominal diseases (such as pancreatitis ) and rheumatism .

diagnosis

Signs of a serothorax are a noticeable dampening of the percussion of the chest, only a slight or imperceptible breathing noise as well as a shadowing of the diseased thorax area in the X-ray image.

therapy

The pleural effusion is treated with a pleural puncture . The puncture serves to reduce pressure symptoms in the thorax and to identify the causative pathogen. The disease causing the serothorax is to be treated surgically or internally, depending on its genesis.
