Hyperion (tree)

Coordinates: 41 ° 12 ′ 40 ″  N , 124 ° 0 ′ 10 ″  W The Hyperion is currently considered the tallest known tree on earth (2019). It is a coastal sequoia ( Sequoia sempervirens ) in the Redwood National Park in California with a height of 115.85 m (measured in 2017). The tree was named after the titan Hyperion in Greek mythology.

Hyperion was discovered on September 8, 2006 by Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. The tree height was confirmed by tree researcher Steve Sillet. It finally received its status as the tallest tree on earth in 2007; He overtook Stratosphere Giant (112.87 m), which is also a coastal redwood. Its age is estimated to be 700 to 800 years.

Hyperion stands on a slope above Redwood Creek in the south of the national park. Coast redwoods are extremely shallow roots and a compaction of the soil by visitors could damage the roots of the tree, so the exact location is kept secret and only the region is given.
