The Árbol del Tule , German tree of Tule , is an approximately 1400–1600 year old specimen of the species Mexican bald cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) . With the diameter of its trunks of 14.05 meters, it is the thickest known tree in the world.
The Tule tree can be found in Santa María del Tule in the Mexican state of Oaxaca . He is one of the largest living beings on earth.
According to the official data of the Mexican SEDUE (Secretaría de Desarrollo Urbano y Ecológico), the "Tree of Tule" has a weight of 636.107 tons at a height of 41.85 m. Its circumference is 46 meters near the ground. When the dead wood was cut out in 1996, it produced 10 tons.
According to a Zapotec legend, the tree was planted 1400 years ago by Pechocha, a priest of the Aztec god Ehecatl . Even today there is a (now Christian ) sanctuary (the Church of Santa Maria del Tule ) nearby.
The tree was nicknamed "Tree of Life" because the shape of its gnarled trunk can be interpreted as animal figures.
