Hypercatalexes
In ancient metrics , the hypercatalexes denote a verse that ends with an extra unstressed syllable.
Example from the Ring des Polykrates by Friedrich Schiller :
- It stood on its battlements
- ◡ — ◡ — ◡ — ◡ — ◡
The first verse is iambic interpreted hyperkatalektisch:
- ◡— | ◡— | ◡— | ◡— | ◡
If one sees this verse as trochaic , however , it is akatalectic ( i.e. complete) with a prelude :
- ◡ | —◡ | —◡ | —◡ | —◡
