Hypertrophic scar (4 months after injury)

The hypertrophic scar arises shortly after the wound has healed or while it is still in progress. The cause is an overproduction of connective tissue fibers . The scar tends to bulge and rises above the surrounding skin level, but is basically limited to the original injury area. Hypertrophic scars occur more often if the wound is not immobilized or spared or if an additional infection occurs.

A distinction is made between the hypertrophic scar and the keloid , in which the bulge formation can extend beyond the originally injured area to undamaged skin .
