It is the largest and southernmost of the three settlement centers in the municipality and the seat of the municipal administration of Tuusula. 19,881 inhabitants live in the village of Hyrylä (2004).

Hyrylä is about 14 km from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and is connected to Helsinki , 28 km away , via the main highway 45 ( Tuusulanväylä ) . Many people have moved to the place who have their jobs in Helsinki as commuters.

Hyrylä was established around a Russian garrison in the 19th century when Finland, as the Grand Duchy of Finland, was part of the Russian Empire. Later the Helsinki Air Defense Regiment was stationed here. The Finnish Air Defense Museum ( Ilmatorjuntamuseo ) is still located in Hyrylä today .
