Suardones

The Suardonen ( Suarines , Suarmes , Smarines - depending on the spelling of the manuscripts and prints of Tacitus ) were a Germanic tribe practicing the Nertus cult .

After examining all the manuscripts and prints, Hans Ferdinand Maßmann found no significant differences between them. He confirmed the membership of the Sueven tribe . They were based in the area around the Schweriner See in Mecklenburg, as the first name of Schwerin Suarin indicates. Also in the Edda , a King Granmar on Suarinshügel is mentioned in the song by Helgi the Hundingstöter. In Gylfaginning , the younger Edda, a Svarinhügel towards Aurwang on Jörnwall is mentioned.

The background to the latter is that in the early Middle Ages before the Viking Age, the southern Baltic coast ( Reidgotaland in Nordic legendary names) was under the influence of Scandinavian princes who then ruled the Baltic Sea. This time is called the Vendel time after the important place where their ship graves were found .
