i-doit (I document IT) is a web-based free software that is used to document complex IT infrastructures ( IT documentation ), supplemented by additional functions of a configuration management database (CMDB). Elements of an IT infrastructure are created as objects and given attributes. i-doit serves as a database for other applications and ITIL processes such as change, release or incident management. The functionality is supplemented by interfaces, modules and extensions.

The company synetics from Düsseldorf is behind the development of i-doit .

open and pro variant

i-doit is published both in an open version (free software) and in a pro version (proprietary). The pro variant differs from the open variant in terms of additional functions and warranty.

history

The development of i-doit began in 2004 and version 0.8 was published for the first time. In 2007 the decision was made to place i-doit under the AGPLv3 license with the release of the 0.9 version. Another major milestone appeared in 2012 with version 1.0. Versions with improvements and additional functions appear every six months from version 1.5, versions with bug fixes and small improvements every 4–6 weeks.

Interfaces to third-party applications

i-doit offers interfaces to third-party applications from the IT service management (ITSM) area:

General interfaces

Add-ons

The functionality of i-doit is supplemented by add-ons (selection):

  • VIVA: Documentation of ISMS processes according to BSI IT-Grundschutz
  • Documents: Creation of documents from the IT documentation
  • Analysis: Make data and documentation quality measurable, show the effects of failures
  • RfC: Documenting and mapping processes in Change Management (ITIL)
  • Relocations: Document change of location
  • Room plan: 2D visualization of locations and the IT infrastructure available there
  • Device replacement: Document defective devices and their replacement
  • Maintenance intervals: Document planning and implementation of maintenance

criticism

A frequently mentioned criticism of i-doit is the inconsistent usability. "It takes too many clicks to get data." With the release of version 1.0, the GUI was revised. Another criticism is that the open version is only available in English.
