The Romanian IAR-39 was a single-engine reconnaissance and bomber aircraft of the Second World War .

development

Construction work at Industria Aeronautică Română in Brașov began in the mid-1930s with the previous IAR-37 , which first flew in 1937. It was designed as a one -and- a -half-decker in a wood-metal composite construction, had a rigid chassis and was powered by a K.14 radial engine . It was equipped with double controls, an Estopey bomb target, camera and radio and could carry up to six 100 kg bombs at underwing stations. As a characteristic feature, it had a window on the right and left in the sides of the fuselage for better observation of the battlefield.

Series production began in 1938. The successor model was the IAR-38 , created in 1939, with an enlarged wing area of 5 m² and a less powerful BMW engine. About 125 copies of both types were made.

The main model was finally the IAR-39 in the same year , which was again equipped with a K.14 engine. Due to its somewhat smaller size, it had a better initial climb rate than its predecessor. About 100 IARs were created at IAR and 96 IAR-39s at Societateapentru exploatari tehnice (SET) in Bucharest , which were added to the Romanian Air Force (Fortelor Aeriene Regal ale Romania) in 1940. Only a prototype of the planned successor model IAR-47 was created in 1940.

The IAR-39 were used in the war against the Soviet Union as a tactical scout or light bomber, despite their outdated design. The IAR-39 that remained after the end of the war were used by the newly formed socialist Romanian air force as training and liaison aircraft.
