History and technology

The booking engine was able to carry out commercial tasks automatically. It thus served similar purposes in companies as computer systems do today. Marketing for the IBM 407 was given up in 1976. With the introduction of the IBM 1401 in 1959, the era of medium data technology began , and the tabulating machines were gradually replaced. Almost at the same time as the IBM 407, the IBM 604 was introduced in 1948 . This is something in between a tabulator and a universal computer .

The IBM 407 was the last and highest quality of the fully electromechanical tabulating machines from IBM . It had integrated a punch card reader and a printer . There were two model variants with reading speeds of 100 and 150 punch cards per minute, respectively. In the machine, processing steps could be programmed such as reading in a pile of punched cards, adding the coded numbers on the punched cards, etc. The programming was done with cables plugged into the pin board. The monthly rent for the machine was $ 800 to $ 920.
