IBM 3486 Terminal

IBM 5250 was originally a name for a series of terminal devices that came with the IBM System / 3 , System / 32 and System / 34 minicomputers . Later they were also used for computers of the type System / 36 , System / 38 and for the AS / 400 . In addition to the hardware, 5250 also refers to the protocol that is used to transfer data on this terminal.

Basics

Similar to the IBM 3270 , it is a block-oriented terminal protocol. The 5250 data stream sends special marking elements as byte information which, for example, define the boundaries of input fields and areas highlighted in color. A status indicating whether the system is currently busy with a request is also given. Over time, the 5250 definition was expanded so that standard GUI elements such as checkboxes, context menus or the handling of mouse events are now available.

Hardware-5250 terminals accept connections to the host computer via twinax on cable. This type of connection has become rare, however, since a large number of PC and web-based emulation programs are available today that are able to interpret the data stream. Some emulation packages such as IBM iSeries Access offer many additional functions in addition to the actual display, such as complete graphical system administration, support for file transfer processes, macros , client-server database access or printer emulation .

Telnet 5250

Telnet 5250 (TN5250) means the transmission of a 5250 data stream using the Telnet protocol. The software used for this is also referred to as TN5250. The emulator can be operated via the TCP / IP protocol instead of SNA . ASCII Telnet clients (such as xterm or the telnet.exe supplied with MS Windows) cannot be used as a replacement for TN5250 clients due to their fundamentally different structure.
