ICi House in Melbourne

The ICI House , which is now Orica House is called, is a 20-storey office building in the eastern Melbourne in Victoria , Australia . After its completion in 1958, it was the tallest building in Australia and the first skyscraper in Australia whose shell was entirely glazed. This construction method then became decisive for the expansion of the city centers of Australia. The glazed tower was included on September 25, 2005 in the Australian National Heritage List and also in the Victoria Heritage List as worthy of protection.

It was built between 1955 and 1958 and symbolizes Australia's openness to the world after the Second World War and, on the occasion of the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, it was intended to show the world public that Australia has opened up to the usual standard of building in the world.

After completion, the construction of a further 22 high-rise buildings in Melbourne followed, originally only houses with a maximum of 11 to 12 floors were allowed. Melbourne then had to adapt its building rules.

The building was designed by Sir Osborne McCutcheon and followed the trend that began in the USA with the construction of the United Nations Headquarters .

The building is home to the Australian company Orica , which is listed on the S & P / ASX 50 stock index and manufactures various types of explosives and other chemical products.
