Nossen is a railway junction where the Borsdorf – Coswig, Zellwaldbahn , Riesa – Nossen and Freital-Potschappel – Nossen narrow-gauge railway all come together. Therefore, extensive railway facilities and a depot to supply the vehicles were built. With the gradual closure of the lines from 1972 onwards, the node and the depot lost its importance.

The IG Dampflok Nossen association has had its home in the railway depot since 1992 , with the aim of maintaining the railway tradition of the Nossen railway junction and the Zellwaldbahn. The Großvoigtsberg museum station plays a special role in the activities of the association. An important economic pillar for the association's project was the existence of the initially still carried out passenger traffic on the Borsdorf – Coswig railway line and the connection of the Rhäsa tank farm to the remaining railway network of the Riesa – Nossen railway line, which guaranteed regular rail operations. There has been no regular public transport in Nossen since 2015 .

Due to the existing possibilities for locomotive repairs, Wedler-Franz-Logistik uses the locomotive shed to repair diesel and steam locomotives. In the depot, repairs are carried out on historic vehicles, such as the 99 715 . There are also the club's own steam locomotives, which are mainly 52.80 and 50.35 . The VT 4.12.02 was already in the Nossen locomotive shed, which offers enough space for storage .
