With VT 12.4 ( type Bautzen ) two four-axle combustion light railcars were the Deutsche Reichsbahn referred. They were sample models developed in 1963 that were later used under the series designations 173 001 and 002.

Technical specifications

VT 4.12.01 (173 001)

The 24 meter long combustion railcars had two two-axle bogies. The drive systems consisted of two underfloor water-cooled six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines, each with an output of 147 kW (173 001) and 162 kW (173 002). Each motor drove the inner wheel set of a bogie. Due to the relatively high drive power at the time, the vehicles had good acceleration capabilities and a top speed of 125 km / h (on DR routes the maximum top speed was 120 km / h). The vehicles differed in the allocation of seats. In the first prototype, only second-class seats were installed. In the first prototype there were 84 seats and 116 standing places. In the second prototype, nine 1st class seats were built in and separated into 2nd class by a partition (all smoker seats) and 56 2nd class seats, separated into smoking and non-smoking compartments. There was only one toilet in 173 001, while 173 002 had two toilets opposite each other. The car body was made of lightweight steel with St 38 steel.

Control cars were planned, but these were never built. In N-gauge, however, a GDR manufacturer also made models of the never-real-life control cars.

The two cars therefore differed in some details. The front side was designed differently. In contrast to the first, the second railcar had a protruding sun protection roof, curved side windows, lights next to one another instead of one above the other, driver's cab doors, and a pulled-down apron. After an accident in 1973, the front of the 173 002 was changed. The 173 001 initially had a red color with white ribbon windows, later it was given a light gray color with a blue apron and four blue decorative stripes.

Use and whereabouts

VT 4.12.01 (173 001) in the former Hoyerswerda depot

Series production did not take place because the Deutsche Reichsbahn decided to continue building the Bautzen type two-axle rail bus ( DR series VT 2.09 ) and so there was no production capacity for series production. A converted former railcar, which was initially run as VB 147 081 and from 1970 as 197 821, served as a sidecar. Both prototypes retired from service in the 1970s, but were not scrapped. Today (2019) they are still in different, non-operational, states. 173 001 is in the former Hoyerswerda depot, 173 002 at Waggonbau Dessau. The vehicle 173 001 was offered for sale in spring 2017.

VT 4.12.01 (173 001) in the former Hoyerswerda depot, status at the beginning of 2018

At the beginning of 2018, according to the citizens of Hoyerswerda, no buyer has yet been found for the vehicle, and it is in its original state. It is located on a section of track separated from the Bw site, so that the recovery of the vehicle is as difficult as it was for years next to it parked 23 1019 would fail.
