history

The two forerunners of the IJmuider Courant are the free Advertentieblad voor IJmuiden, de Heide, Velsen en Omstreken , which appeared for the first time in January 1896, and Vraag en Aanbod , which was launched in September 1904. The former was taken over by PFC Roelse in 1906, who added the subheading "IJmuider Courant". At the suggestion of various IJmuider dignitaries, the editors of both newspapers merged and founded the IJmuider Courant as a joint successor newspaper . From 1916 it first appeared on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After a few years, the paper had 2,300 subscribers.

The Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant and the Haarlem's Dagblad brought out local editions for IJmuiden since 1926 and 1931, respectively, thus increasing competition considerably. In view of this, the IJmuider Courant was forced to undertake special offers, for example they offered accident insurance in conjunction with a subscription. Ultimately, this did not help, the ruinous price war in the advertising market finally led to the IJmuider Courant being taken over by the Haarlem's Dagblad .

During the Second World War , the German occupiers forced the IJmuider Courant in 1942 to merge with the other local newspaper, Dagblad , and the same was true of the once bitter rivals Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant and Haarlem's Dagblad , the latter being left with the name alone. On January 1, 1992, the editor of the Haarlems Dagblad (after the war without an apostrophe) and the IJmuider Courant , Damiate, merged with the editor of the Noordhollands Dagblad , VND, to form the new publisher HDC Media.
