The IPT-16 Surubim is a sport aircraft produced by the Brazilian manufacturer Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnologicas (IPT).
history
In 1949, Joseph Kovacs , a Hungarian-born aircraft engineer who worked at the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnologicas in São Paulo , suggested that the institute design and build an experimental, high-performance, light aircraft based around a Hirth-HM imported before the war -506 engine should be constructed around. However, since the institute did not support Kovács, he and his institute colleague Sylvio de Oliveira began to work in a rented building on the machine, which was now called Surubim (little devil). In 1951, Kovács left the institute, so Oliveira continued working on the prototype alone. The machine was acquired by IPT in 1953 as a flying test platform and was now named IPT-16 Surubim . The work on the aircraft was slow, however, so that it could only take off on its maiden flight on September 17, 1959. Despite some weaknesses, the overall performance was good. After it had served its purpose as a test platform, the aircraft was handed over to the Aeroclube de Rio Claro , where it was used for aerobatic training until the 1980s.
The machine was donated to the Museu Aerospecial in Rio de Janeiro in 1989 , where it has been on display since its restoration.
construction
The machine is a wooden construction, which is planked with plywood from local woods and has a conventional tail unit. It has a closed cockpit and a retractable tail wheel landing gear, which was replaced by a fixed landing gear in 1979.
