Josef Nikolaus Köstler

Josef Nikolaus Köstler (born July 18, 1902 in Rosenheim , † December 24, 1982 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German forest scientist and rector of the Ludwig Maximilians University .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1921, Köstler studied art history , economics and forestry in Munich and Kiel at the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . In 1927 he was promoted to Dr. oec. publ. and in 1932 Dr. phil. PhD. In 1933 Köstler worked at the Bavarian Ministry of Finance. After completing his habilitation with Victor Dieterich , Köstler first became professor of forest policy at the Hannoversch Münden Forestry University in 1934 . In 1939 he became professor for forest policy and forest business administration in Göttingen and during the war years from 1939 to 1945 he set up the International Forestry Center in Berlin , which he also headed. In 1946 he was appointed to the chair of silviculture and forest management at the Ludwig Maximilians University. In 1953 he was elected rector of the university (until 1954). In 1970 he retired, but held the chair on a provisional basis until 1972. His successor was Peter Burschel .
