The International year of quiet Sun 1964/1965 (IJRS or English International Year of the Quiet Sun, 1964/1965 , IQSY ; also International year of quiet Sun , International Years of the Quiet Sun was an international research project to evaluate the impact of) Solar activity on Earth during a sunspot minimum .

history

To study geophysical phenomena, the International Geophysical Year 1957/58 was launched during the time of a sunspot maximum . In order to study the influence of solar activity during the calm phase of the eleven year cycle, the “International Year of the Calm Sun” was carried out under the coordination of the International Council of Scientific Unions in the following period of a sunspot minimum from January 1, 1964 to December 31, 1965 . Intensive international observation programs have been carried out worldwide in almost all branches of geophysics , solar and geophysical phenomena have been investigated by observatories around the world and with the help of spacecraft .

In the international research project "Year of the Calm Sun" a. polar research stations in Antarctica . Here, the main focus was placed on series of measurements on the aurora borealis , the ionosphere , the earth's magnetic field and on meteorological data.

A total of over 70 nations took part in the IQSY. Mainly there were countries such as B. Argentina , Australia , Belgium , Chile , Great Britain , France , New Zealand , South Africa , the Soviet Union and the USA , which had already participated in the International Geophysical Year.
