IRESC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Radio Emergency Support Coalition is an organization of radio amateurs based in Pueblo (Colorado) who make their communications technology available to provide help in the event of an emergency or disaster . It was founded in October 2010.

background

In the event of an emergency or disaster, the communication infrastructure often breaks down. In the event of a prolonged and widespread power failure, landline and mobile phones can no longer be used or the networks including satellite connections are overloaded. In some cases, lines are cut off by the damage situation. Internet connections often break down parallel to the telephone network.

Shortwave radio, on the other hand, does not depend on a local or national network. Radios are mobile and can be operated, for example, with a car battery or a generator. International aid organizations therefore often use shortwave and increasingly satellite radio for communication. In the amateur radio bands, the International Amateur Radio Union IARU has declared a number of frequencies as emergency radio frequencies . If necessary, only emergency radio traffic takes place on them.

Communication is important for quick and coordinated first aid.

Technical means

The IRESC crew uses different modes of communication including shortwave, VHF, UHF and satellite connections. Internet-based Echolink VoIP communication is mainly used. The trunk systems use the Internet to enable communication without the propagation and interference errors of the radio paths. In this way, the connection between a disaster zone and the relief workers can be established, even if they are on opposite sides of the planet.

Political activities

The organization has also published various political appeals. Because of the civil war in Syria , they are calling for the resignation of the Syrian president and an overthrow by the armed forces, and they have also spoken out on women's rights .
