I Never Knew (That Roses Grew) is a song written by Ted Fiorito (music) and Gus Kahn (lyrics) and published in 1925.

Background and first recordings

Written as a love song in G major in the form of a ballad with the structure AABA, the song was introduced by Fiorito's own Sweet Band. Vincent Lopez ( Okeh ) and Gene Austin ( Victor ) have made other early recordings . Over time, the song evolved from a love song to a jazz standard , usually played at a brisk pace .

Peggy Lee interpreted him in Pete Kelly's Blues (1955). The song was often played in jazz, including a. by Joe Pass , Stéphane Grappelli , Bing Crosby / Buddy Cole , Kenny Burrell , Charlie Christian , Mildred Bailey , Ray Nance and Lester Young .
