I Sam-pyeong ( 李 参 平 , also Yi Sam-pyeong , Japanese Ri Sampei ; † 1655 ), also known by its Japanese name Kanagae Sampē ( 金 ヶ 江 三 兵衛 or 金 江 三 兵衛 ), is considered the father of Imari porcelain (Arita porcelain) viewed in Japan. He was born in what is now Banpo-myeon , Gongju , Korea (the then Kingdom of Joseon or the Yi dynasty) and kidnapped by Japanese invaders during Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea along with numerous other artisans. In 1616 he discovered a kaolin deposit on Mount Izumi-yama in Arita and laid the foundation for the porcelain industry in Japan.
He is venerated in Sueyama-Jinja (a Shinto shrine) as the father of Arita porcelain.
