Ibn Tifilwit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ibn Tifilwit , with full name Abu-Bakr ibn Ibrahim ibn Tifilwit as-Sahrawi , was the brother-in-law of Ali ibn Yusuf and between 1115 and 1117 the last Almoravid emir in the Taifa of Saragossa .

Life

In contrast to his warlike predecessor Muhammad ibn al-Hajj , Ibn Tifilwit was a peace-loving ruler who surrounded himself with poets such as Ibn Jafaya from Alzira . Only one small military undertaking against Borja and Rueda de Jalón is known of him, with which he wanted to put Abd al-Malik Imad ad-Daula in his place. The dethroned Hudid ruler had become the vassal of Alfonso I of Aragón and spread hostility over the district of Saragossa .

Ibn Tifilwit preferred to indulge himself in courtly and so had become the focal point of cultural events in the salons of the fortress palace of the Aljafería .

Ibn Tifilwit had appointed the philosopher Avempace as vizier . However, his character quickly made many enemies and was then imprisoned. After his release, Avempace preferred to leave the city.

Ibn Tifilwit died in the winter of 1117 and had no other Muslim successor. On December 18, 1118 Alfonso I entered the city after having besieged it for a long time according to a well thought out plan.
