Ibtissam Betty Lachgar (born August 1975 in Rabat , Morocco ) is a Moroccan feminist , human rights and LGBT activist. She is a co-founder of the MALI movement ( Mouvement alternatif pour les libertés individuales ) and is one of the few openly atheist Moroccans.

Life

Youth and education

Ibtissam Lachgar was born in Rabat in August 1975. She attended the Lycée Descartes in the Moroccan capital Rabat. After completing school, she moved to Paris to study clinical psychology , criminology and victimology .

In 2009 Lachgar and his friend Zineb El Rhazouni founded the Mouvement alternatif pour les libertés individuales (MALI), a movement (action alliance) for more basic rights in Morocco. She is also known for her LGBT activism in Morocco, she also stands for the right to contraception (“Pro-Choix”) and marriage for everyone .

On September 13, 2010, Lachgar and friends organized a public picnic during Ramadan between Casablanca and Rabat to protest against Article 222 of the Moroccan Penal Code, which criminalizes breaking the rules of fasting during the holy month. The picnic was prematurely broken up by the police. The action sparked a controversial debate about religious freedom in Moroccan society.

After three young people had been arrested in October 2013 for posting a photo of themselves kissing on Facebook, she and friends organized a "kiss-in" in Rabat. The "kiss-in" took place on October 12th, the demonstrators also said loudly "Long Live Love". In an interview with France 24 , Lachgar described the campaign as a success and the message that everyone should be allowed to kiss in public had arrived.
